Spotlight on Investors: Inception Micro Angel Family of Funds
The Inception Micro Angel Family of Funds ("IMAF") continues to seek and invest in seed stage companies through out North Carolina. The family of funds consists of 4 committed angel funds located in Asheville, Charlotte, Greenville and Winston Salem, NC. During the first half of 2009, IMAF invested over $1 million in two new portfolio companies including Applied Catheter Technologies and TrackLok Corp. In partnership with the NC Biotechnology Center and North Carolina's Small Business & Technology Development Center, IMAF has developed and launched the NC Capital Highway web site ( www.nccapitalhighway.com) and the Human Capital Database. Support for seed and early-stage growth companies is what IMAF is all about. With over 150 members participating in mentoring, counseling and educational processes,member involvement and opportunities are abundant.
Spotlight on Investors: Upstate Carolina Angel Network
The Upstate Carolina Angel Network ("UCAN") is a young but active angel investor group based in Greenville, South Carolina. The group was launched in the spring of 2008 and to date has invested more than $1.8 million in six companies. The group focuses its investment activities primarily on startup and early stage companies located in the Southeastern U.S., and although the group does not have a strict industry focus, it favors high-growth opportunities in advanced materials, industrial applications, information technology and medical devices. Our investors are actively seeking new opportunities to invest in strong startup teams and businesses, and we welcome the opportunity to syndicate deals with other angel groups in the region. The Piedmont Angel Network ("PAN") is aggressively bucking the current funding environment. The fund, during the first half of 2009, invested over $2 million in five new portfolio companies including Extend Energy, a solar energy integrator founded by Travis Simpson, a seasoned entrepreneur with ties to the group, Raw Essentials, a skincare products company founded by Carol Alt, Protochips, manufacturers of holey carbon films for cryo-transmission electron microscopy and developers of the Aduro, a revolutionary MEMS-based heating stage for high-resolution electron microscopy, BeliefNetworks, a technology to transform real time, structured and unstructured data - such as marketing campaign data, customer behavior information and social network conversations - into actionable knowledge for improved customer experience, and Pique Therapeutics, a vaccine for non-small cell lung cancer entering Phase II clinical trials.
